The rear of a Palm Beach County school bus caught fire this morning as the vehicle traveled I-95. The driver heard a noise and pulled off to the side of the roadway afer seeing a warning light and says he heard a loud noise. By the time he got to the side of the road, Elton Shakes says the rear of the bus was on fire.
No students were aboard. Shakes had yet to reach his first stop to pick up Dreyfoos School of the Arts students in Jupiter.
Firefighters from Palm Beach Gardens responded and put out the fire. It was reported shortly after six this morning along the northbound lanes. The roadway is all clear now, but for a time the merge lane from PGA to the interstate was shut down while they worked on the fire.
