The New England Patriots have released tight end Aaron Hernandez, following his arrest in connection with a murder.
The former University of Florida player was reportedly with 27-year old Odin Lloyd, a semi-pro football player, before his death. Officials have ruled the death a homicide but haven't said how he died.
Hernandez was taken into custody from his Massachussetts home today, but it's unclear what charge he will face. State police won't discuss the charge until it's presented in court. Investigators have searcehd in and around Hernandez's home several tmies in connection with Lloyd's death.
Family members say Lloyd was dating a woman whose sister is Hernandez's fiancee.
Here is a statement released from the Patriots organization:
"A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do."
